Kitchen

You share the kitchen with your flatmates. There is space in the fridge for your groceries – the shelves are numbered so that everyone has their own area. An oven, hob and microwave are available. The kitchen cupboards are also allocated by room, so you have your own areas and there are no mix-ups.

Bathroom

You share the bathroom with your flatmates. Cleanliness matters a lot to us: the kitchen and bathroom are cleaned professionally by us on a regular basis. In the bathroom you have your own storage space, provided there is enough room. We expect all residents to leave the common areas clean and tidy after use.

Living together in the flatshare

With us you will not find a classic flatshare with a shared living room and joint dinners. Flatmates live largely independently: people greet each other in a friendly way, respect quiet hours and leave each other in peace. Most tenants use the room mainly for sleeping and are out during the day. Doing laundry

You can do your laundry in this property. Ask about laundry times and any costs during the viewing. In Switzerland it is common for several households to share a laundry room – in practice this works very well as long as everyone sticks to the agreed times.

Waste disposal in the canton of Zurich

In the canton of Zurich you need special chargeable rubbish bags for household waste, which you can buy at the checkout in any grocery store. Glass, PET, cardboard and metal are disposed of free of charge at public collection points. Note: fines for incorrectly disposed waste can be very high in Switzerland – ask your flatmates how disposal is handled in this property.

Cleanliness

The common areas – kitchen, bathroom and hallway – are cleaned professionally by us on a regular basis. This is already included in the rent. Please leave the rooms the way you would like to find them: do the washing-up, wipe the hob, and do not leave spoiled food lying around.

Shoes and clothing outside the room

Outside your room, shoes and outerwear may only be kept in the cupboards provided for this purpose. Most properties have a cupboard in the entrance area where you can store shoes, coats and jackets. We will show you where it is during the viewing.

Living in the canton of Zurich – tips for newcomers

Registration & authorities

After moving in, you must register with the residents’ registration office within 14 days. In the city of Zurich this is the population office / district office of your city district. With your tenancy agreement, ID and a passport photo, registration is usually quick. If you live in a suburban municipality, you register with the relevant municipal office.

Shopping

Zurich has everything for shopping: around the main station and in ShopVille you will find numerous shops, open in the evenings and on Sundays too. For everyday shopping, Migros and Coop are present in every neighbourhood, while Aldi and Lidl offer lower prices. An insider tip for fresh produce: the weekly markets at Bürkliplatz and Helvetiaplatz.

Leisure & nature

Lake Zurich and the Limmat are at the heart of leisure life: in summer, numerous lidos such as Seebad Enge or Frauenbad Stadthausquai invite you for a swim – plus free river swimming in the Limmat. The Uetliberg is the city’s local mountain, reachable in 20 minutes by S-Bahn – with a great view over the city and the lake. Winter sports areas such as Flumserberg or Hoch-Ybrig are quick to reach.

Meeting people

As a newcomer you will quickly find your feet in Zurich: InterNations Zurich regularly organises events for new arrivals. On Meetup.com there are groups for almost every interest – from hiking to language tandems to tech. For students, the clubs and societies at the University and ETH are an ideal starting point. And the classic option: in the many cafés and bars in districts 4 and 5, it is easy to strike up a conversation.

Mobility & public transport

Public transport in Zurich is among the best in the world: trams, buses and S-Bahn trains run frequently and take you everywhere. A ZVV travelcard covers the whole city, and there are suitable zones for trips in the region. For short distances, a bicycle or a PubliBike is ideal. The main station connects you to the airport and the rest of Switzerland in no time.

Eating out

Zurich is a paradise for foodies: in districts 4 and 5, street food, international cuisine and trendy bars line the streets. For classic Swiss food, try the Zeughauskeller near Paradeplatz. On a small budget, the canteens at the university and ETH are worth it and are open to guests too. A local tip: be sure to try an original Zurich-style sliced veal.
